It’s 7am. The site starts in ninety minutes. You’re four calls deep into your contacts list and the two people who’ve actually picked up are already booked. Sound familiar?
Most contractors and PMs source labour the way the industry has for decades: a mental list of numbers, built up over years, worked through in roughly the order of who’s most likely to answer. It works — until the gap is urgent, or the usual names are all busy, or you need a trade you’ve never had to source before.
The limit of the phone-round method isn’t effort, it’s the size of the list in your head. Searching a platform by trade, location and current availability finds people your personal contacts book never will, particularly outside your usual patch or for a trade you don’t often need.
A phone call tells you someone’s available. It tells you almost nothing about whether they’re good. Project photos, work history and trade credentials, checked before you pick up the phone, do the filtering a first conversation used to have to do.
The tradespeople worth calling in an emergency are usually the ones you’d already decided you trusted before the emergency existed. Searching, saving and messaging people during quieter weeks — before there’s a gap to fill — turns next month’s crisis into a two-minute message instead of an hour of dialling.
Agencies exist because sourcing labour is genuinely hard. But every agency in the chain adds a fee, a delay, and someone speaking for the tradesperson instead of the tradesperson speaking for themselves. Messaging someone directly, based on their actual profile rather than an agency’s pitch, is usually faster and always cheaper.
Word of mouth only reaches as far as your existing network. A skilled tradesperson two boroughs over, who’d happily take the work, is invisible to you until there’s a way to search for them specifically.
The phone-round method isn’t wrong, exactly. It’s just slow, and it only works until it doesn’t. A searchable pool of tradespeople — verified where possible, visible on your terms — means the next urgent gap is a search, not a scramble.
